What does being a Christian have to do with clean water in Africa? The Great Commission sheds light on why Christians must care about clean water, and why Christians must play a part in helping people to have access to it: (emphasis mine)

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Jesus has commanded us to go into all nations, baptizing them.
Is clean water necessary for baptism? Is it necessary for health and hygiene?

Jesus showed great compassion on people. In doing so, He set an example for us. He wants us to show compassion for people also.

It is more compassionate to prevent illness than to allow people to become ill and then try to heal them. What would you prefer? To stay well, or to become ill and be healed? What do you wish upon your loved ones? Health? Or illness followed by recovery?

Clean water is necessary for baptism, health and hygiene.

Millions of children are too young to understand the gospel. They are too young to be labeled "believers" and "non-believers." They are too young to be blamed for "failing to believe the gospel." These children need clean water every day. Without it, they become sick unnecessarily. They suffer, and many of them die painful deaths. Jesus is watching us to see if we will follow His example, show compassion and do our part to alleviate their suffering.
